Vitality Made Simple

The “Calories In, Calories Out” Myth: Dr. Robert Lustig

Debbie Ozment, DDS, MS Season 1 Episode 224

Think all calories are equal? Think again. In this episode of Vitality Made Simple, Dr. Robert Lustig joins us to explain how the “calories in, calories out” weight loss model fails to account for the complexities of our biology. He explains why equal calorie counts can have unequal effects: fiber reduces absorption, protein costs energy to process, fats are not metabolically equivalent, and fructose impairs mitochondria and drives insulin resistance.

Dr. Lustig delves into why intact fiber is much better at slowing sugar absorption, while pulverized fiber, like juice and smoothies, can instead spike insulin. He also weighs on GLP-1 agonists, which can be helpful but have significant drawbacks like digestive issues, muscle loss, and weight regain. He stresses that true health comes from eating whole foods, exercising, and finding joy beyond sugary treats.
